Lola Nell Knight was welcomed into the heavenly kingdom on Nov. 25, 2019, at the age of 82. She was surrounded by her family when she was peacefully taken from this world. During the past couple of years, Nell faced many health battles, including hip replacement and small cell lung cancer. She demonstrated great faith through her illnesses and was an inspiration to those around her.

Nell was a lifelong resident of Varnado. She was a 1955 Varnado High School graduate. During her senior year, she was named “Best All-Around Girl” and received the “Magic City Post 24 American Legion Award” for character, courage, scholarship, leadership, and service. Throughout high school, she was a valuable basketball player for the Kittens and averaged 18 points per game. Nell was a secretary at Varnado Elementary School for over 40 years, retiring in 2010 when the school closed. She served as secretary for Clotilde Chandler, who was the first principal of the school; followed by Mickey Fornea; and then her daughter, Ginger Champagne. Nell laughed often, loved much and could always find the best in others. She leaves this world a better place for all who had the joy of knowing her. Nell was also a member of Varnado United Methodist Church.

Nell is survived by four children, Ricky Knight, Rhonda Gunnell, Jody Knight (Teresa) and Ginger Champagne (Matt); seven grandchildren, Julie Beck (George), David Gunnell, Crystal Champagne, Chad Champagne (Darla), Kelly Thiebaud (Ryan), Maddie Champagne and Justin Gunnell; five great-grandchildren, William Hollywood, Meredith Beck, Lily Beck, Miley Thiebaud and Addison Lott; one brother, John Dawsey (Gena); one sister, Beth Seal (Shellie); two special nieces, Brenda Williams and Genie Williams (Gene); and other numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Knight; mother and father, Aver and John Dawsey; sister, Rita Dawsey; and sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Ancel Williams.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home in Bogalusa.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2019, from 9 a.m. until the service time at 3 p.m. at Varnado United Methodist Church in Varnado. The funeral followed at the church at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Kathy Pfleider officiating. Interment followed at the T.P. Fornea Cemetery in Varnado.
