Ruth Goldman Asher

Ruth Goldman Asher passed away peacefully on Aug. 12, 2016.

She was born Dec. 20, 1922, in Bogalusa, where she was a lifelong resident until retiring to New Orleans in 1985. At the age of 16, Ruth entered her freshman year at Newcomb College. After graduation, she moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the Department of the Navy. After World War II ended, Ruth moved home to Bogalusa, where she helped run her family retail business, Goldman’s of Bogalusa, with her husband Adolph Asher and her brother Bernard Goldman. She served as past president of the Bogalusa chapter of Hadassah and was a member of the Bogalusa Civic League, the National Council of Jewish Women, and Congregation Gates of Prayer Sisterhood.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Sadie and Jacob Goldman; her brother, Bernard Goldman; and her loving and devoted husband of 65 years, Adolph Edward Asher.

She is survived by her children, Marilyn and Joseph Kline, Harold and Carol Asher, and Eilene and Barry Spizer; grandchildren, Steven Spizer and NancyConescu, Alli and Kevin Maney, Mark and Adelaide Spizer, Jeff and Allison Asher, and Jason Spizer; and great-grandchildren Henry, Edward, Oliver, Shane, Andy, and Albert.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Aug. 14, at Congregation Gates of Prayer, 4000 West Esplanade Ave., in Metairie, with visitation at 10 a.m., followed by services at 11 a.m. with Rabbi Robert Loewy officiating.
