Bogalusa’s Lumberjacks return home tonight to open District 8-3A play in a contest against the Amite Warriors.

The Lumberjacks (1-4) lost their second straight game Saturday in tough fashion, 33-32, against Miller-McCoy Academy in double overtime.

“It was an excellent high school game. They played hard. Unfortunately, we were on the losing end. We can’t gripe and mope about it. All we can do move on to the next one,” Bogalusa coach Craig Jones said.

Bogalusa is 40th in power points for Class 3A.

Despite the loss, Lumberjacks quarterback Reggie Roberts put up some good numbers.

The signal caller accounted for all five scores.

Roberts threw for two touchdowns, both to Caleb Greely, from 12 and 23 yards out.

He also ran three on runs of 3, 23 and 10.

The offense struggled in the second half until late and then drove 55 yards with fewer than 40 seconds left to put the game into overtime.

Jones said the main thing with the offense is maintaining blocking for a whole game instead of just one half.

Defensively, the unit was put in some tough spots throughout the second half but continually held Miller-McCoy off of the board until late in the fourth period.

Miller-McCoy also had a punt return for a TD.

Jones said the thing they are working on is not giving up the big play, which is what happened on all of Miller-McCoy’s scores last week except for one.

The first touchdown had a 33-yard completion during the drive after the ball was deflected.

The Lions’ second touchdown was the 60-yard punt return, and the third featured a 24-yard run.

The fourth TD was in the first overtime, but no really big plays. The longest was an eight yard run.

The final touchdown came on third-and-goal from the 16.

For Amite, the Warriors (3-2) come in after falling to Franklinton, 39-13.

Amite’s two losses have come against good competition, Ponchatoula (5-0) and Franklinton (4-1). Ponchatoula has four lopsided wins and is ranked fourth in Class 5A by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. Franklinton is sixth in LSWA and has won two straight in lopsided fashion.

Amite’s quarterback is Devarious Henderson ,with Kenner Harrell at running back.

Fred Torrence leads the offense line and was a second-team all-state player last year.

Devonta Smith is one of the wide receivers, and he’s a defensive back for the Warriors.

Defensively, except for the games against Ponchatoula and Franklinton, the team allowed 16 points to Southern Lab and defeated St. Helena College and Career Academy and Belaire in shutout fashion.

Bogalusa’s next game is Thursday against Jewel Sumner’s Cowboys at home.
