BOGALUSA, La. — In an unforgettable Valentine’s Day gesture, Mitchell Castleberry, a Little League Basketball coach in Bogalusa, facilitated a heartwarming trip for 24 young athletes and their families to a New Orleans Pelicans game on Wednesday, February 14, 2023.

The group, totaling 87 participants, attended the game at the Smoothie King Center, courtesy of the Pelicans’ organization, which generously donated all the tickets. This act of kindness provided the children, many of whom had never before witnessed a professional basketball game, with a rare and exciting opportunity.

The highlight of the evening came when the Bogalusa contingent was featured on the jumbotron, a moment of fame that thrilled the young athletes and their supporters. The excitement peaked after the game when the group was invited onto the court, offering them a closer glimpse into the world of professional sports.

Castleberry’s efforts highlight the powerful role sports play in uniting communities and inspiring young individuals. This memorable event not only provided an exciting experience for the young players but also showcased the New Orleans Pelicans’ commitment to community engagement.
