Varnado’s Washington tallies 2 top-3 finishes in meet

Varnado’s Zamoriyon Washington posted in the top three in two events at the PHS Classic at Ponchatoula High School on Thursday.
Washington came in second in the 200 meters and third in the 100.
Washington ran the 200 in 22.89 seconds and the 100 at 11.13.
Teammate Travion Beene was 16th in the 200 in 24.60, while Tyriq Bell came in 24th in the 100 at 12.57.
Slidell’s Dwayne Mills won the 100 in 10.97 and Salmen’s Jacobi Jefferson topped the 200 in 22.74. Varnado was the only team from Washington Parish in the meet.
Ponchatoula won the team part with 137 points, as 17 teams posted points.
Slidell was second with 56.5 points, followed by St. Michael the Archangel’s 51.5, Salmen’s 48.5 and Northlake Christian School rounded out the top five with 42 points.
In the girls, Varnado’s 4×200 relay team was ninth with a time of 2 minutes, 21 seconds. The group included Myeasha Peters, Jamya Bell, Tyrihanna Bell and Naya Bell. Slidell won in 1:49.
Gabrielle Wiggins was 10th in the long jump with a distance of 13 feet, 9.5 inches. Ponchatoula’s Ariana Taylor won at 17-9.
Varnado’s 4×100 relay team that included Wiggins, Shunti WIlliams, Naya Bell and Tyrihanna Bell, came in 10th with a time of 1:00. East St. John won in 51.98.
Jamya Bell and Kinsley Sims ran 17th and 19th in the 400 with times of 1:16 and 1:37. Fontainebleau’s Rebecca Sellers won in 1:01.
Ponchtoula won the team part with 96 points, as 14 teams posted points.
St. Thomas Aquinas was second with 79, followed by East St. John’s 76, St. Michael the Archangel’s 37 and Slidell rounded out the top five with 34.5.
