For the fifth-straight season, Coppin State’s baseball team has been named a recipient of the American baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award, it was announced by the organization last week. To be eligible for the award, teams must have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average during the 2021-22 academic year.
One of the players for Coppin State University is 2019 Bowling Green School graduate Timmy Ruffino.
The Eagles were one of two MEAC teams to receive the honor, along with Maryland Eastern Shore.
The last five seasons of the Eagles’ academic success coincides with the program’s most successful span on the field. Coppin has three 20-plus win seasons during that stretch (2018, 2019, 2022) and 82 victories which includes the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
This past season, the Eagles won a school-record 24 games and their first MEAC Tournament since 1995 while making its first NCAA Regional appearance. In 2023, Coppin will play as an associate member of the Northeast Conference where Fairleigh Dickinson, 2022 Champion Long Island University, and Wagner College took home the Team Academic Excellence Award.
