UTA’s Bengtsson, Texas State’s Collerton claim Sun Belt Men’s Track/Field weekly honors

UTA’s Joel Bengtsson and Texas State’s Ben Collerton have earned recognition as this week’s Sun Belt Men’s Track & Field Athletes of the Week.

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
Joel Bengtsson, UTA
(Jr., Hurdles, Ljungby, Sweden)

Mavs’ junior Joel Bengtsson capped an incredible performance by setting a school-record three times in the men’s 60-meter hurdles at the Texas Tech Open and Multis. After tying Paul Whitty’s record of 7.87 a week ago in College Station, Bengtsson blew past the record in his first run of the day, going for a 7.83 in the prelims. He followed that up with a 7.79 in the semifinal to earn his place in the final. In the final, Bengtsson broke his own mark for the third time, winning the final with a time of 7.78.

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
Ben Collerton, Texas State
(Sr., Multi-Events, Christchurch, New Zealand)

Bobcats’ senior Ben Collerton set a new Texas State track & field program record at last weekend’s Adidas Classic, hosted by the University of Nebraska, with a 5,506 point total in the men’s heptathlon. Collerton’s 5,506 point total is also the most scored by a Sun Belt student-athlete in the men’s heptathlon in conference history. Collerton’s point total was the 16th-best in the NCAA so far this season.
