Burkhalter, Jones named all Louisiana

Nicholls State offensive lineman P.J. Burkhalter and University of Louisiana at Lafayette defensive lineman Andre Jones were named to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association  All-Louisiana Teams.

Burkhalter, who is a 2015 Franklinton High School graduate, is a first-team all-Louisiana player.

This season, Burkhalter and the Colonels offensive line blocked for the Southland Conference’s leading rushing team with 2,714 yards in their 11 games for 246.7 yards rushing per game. Nicholls State was also tops in yards per carry at 5.93.

The 25 touchdowns on the ground was second most in the conference behind Southeastern Louisiana University, which had 30.

Nicholls State went 6-5 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

Jones, who is a 2017 Varnado High School graduate, is a second-team player.

This season, Jones made 60 tackles with 9.5 stops for a loss with six sacks, four passes defended, five quarterback hurries, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles over 14 games.

Jones was part of two championships this season.

He was part of Louisiana’s Sun Belt Conference title team and the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl title.

The Ragin’ Cajuns went 13-1 this season and won their last 13 games after being defeated by Texas, 38-18, in the first week.
