Louisville pulls away in 2nd half for an 86-60 win over SLU

Louisville had four players score in double figures as they defeated th Southeastern Louisiana University men’s basketball team, 86-60, Tuesday night at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville.

SLU (4-7) was led by Keon Clergeot with a game-high 21 points while Joe Kasperzyk added 10. Despite Clergeot and Kasperzyk’s efforts, the Lions shot just 6-for-33 from the three-point line.

Louisville (7-3, 1-0 ACC) had four players in double figures led by Malik Williams with 15 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Matt Cross and El Ellis each had 13 for the Cardinals while Mason Faulkner added 12.

In the first half, the Lions hung tough as they got 12 first half points from Clergeot and trailed 42-31 at halftime. SLU cut a 16-point first half lead down to 11 just before the half as Nick Caldwell drilled a three-pointer and Clergeot hit two free throws in the final minute of the half.

However, the Cardinals opened up the second half on a 10-0 run to take a 52-31 lead. Louisville continued to stretch the lead as they led by as many as 35, 78-43 with 6:19 to go as the Cardinals picked up the win.

Southeastern finished 20-for-62 from the field for 32 percent while Louisville was 30-for-58 for 52 percent. The Lions were 14-for-19 from the free throw line for 74 percent but the Cardinals were 19-for-23 for 82 percent.

The Cardinals had the decisive upper hand in the paint scoring 44 points in the paint to 18 for SLU. Louisville also outrebounded the Lions 40-33 as SLU fell to 0-6 all-time against the ACC.

Next up, Southeastern will take on 11th-ranked Iowa State (10-0) Sunday at 12 p.m. CT in Ames, Iowa.
