Football Offensive Player of the Week
Shermari Jones, Coastal Carolina
(Sr., RB – Pensacola, Fla.)
Chanticleer senior running back Shermari Jones rushed for a career-high 211 yards and a touchdown in Coastal Carolina’s 27-21 overtime win at South Alabama. Jones’ 211 rushing yards are the second-most in a single game in school history and marked his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season. The Pensacola, Fla., native’s career-long 75-yard touchdown scamper on the first play of the fourth quarter put the Chanticleers on top for the first time. Coastal Carolina finished the regular season with 10 wins, marking just the second time in program history that the Chanticleers have posted back-to-back double-digit win seasons (2013 and 2014).
Football Defensive Player of the Week
Silas Kelly, Coastal Carolina
(Super Sr., LB – Mount Airy, Md.)
Chanticleer super senior linebacker Silas Kelly led the defensive unit that held South Alabama to -5 rushing yards in the regular-season finale. The Mount Airy, Md., product finished with 8.0 tackles and a sack—which came on the very last play of the game on fourth down in overtime. His third quarter interception, a leaping one-handed grab inside the Coastal Carolina 5-yard line, led to the Chanticleers first score of the game and was No. 3 on SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays. The two-time team captain helped Coastal Carolina to its second-straight 10-win campaign.
Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Jalen Virgil, App State
(Super Sr., RS – Lawrenceville, Ga.)
Mountaineer super senior return specialist and wide receiver Jalen Virgil took a kickoff return 97 yards to the house, breaking multiple tackles to give App State a two-score advantage in an eventual 27-3 victory over Georgia Southern. The return was the third career kickoff return touchdown for Virgil, tying him with former teammate Darrynton Evans for the program record. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native finished Senior Day with a game-high 136 all-purpose yards—123 kickoff return and 13 receiving.
