UTA’s Brown, Wells, Texas State’s Dewalt earn Sun Belt Volleyball Players of the Week

UTA’s Briana Brown and Alli Wells, and Texas State’s Emily DeWalt all led their teams to undefeated weekends and have been named Sun Belt Volleyball Players of the Week. All three players are multi-time recipients of Sun Belt weekly honors this season.

These mark the final Sun Belt Volleyball Player of the Week accolades of the 2021 campaign.

Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week
Briana Brown, UTA
(Fr., Whitehouse, Texas)

Mavericks’ freshman outside hitter Briana Brown earned her second consecutive Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week award. She hit an impressive .395 on the weekend, finishing with a team-high 38 kills on 76 swings, while having just eight attack errors. Her offensive prowess was crucial as the Mavs were able to secure the No. 2 seed in the West. Brown also finished with three blocks, ending with a team-high 41 points. At Louisiana on Friday, she charted a team-high 24 kills – her second consecutive match with 20-plus kills – and hit .404. In the sweep against ULM on Sunday, Brown led the team with 14 kills while hitting an efficient .379.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Alli Wells, UTA
(So., Waxahachie, Texas)

Mavs’ sophomore libero Alli Wells turned in another impressive weekend, taking home her fourth Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week honor this season. Wells is now 22nd in the nation in digs per set on the season. She finished with 27 digs in the five-set thriller against Louisiana, while ending with 18 digs in three sets against ULM. Wells added 11 assists (1.38 assists per set) on the weekend.

Volleyball Setter of the Week
Emily DeWalt, Texas State
(Sr., Helotes, Texas)

Bobcats’ senior setter Emily DeWalt garnered her fourth Sun Belt Setter of the Week honor this season. She led her team with 74 assists and a 12.33 assists per set mark while guiding the Texas State offense to 105 kills (15.0 kills per set) on a .341 attack percentage this past week. Against ULM, DeWalt was credited with 26 assists as the Bobcats had 47 kills on .416 hitting in a three-set win over the Warhawks. DeWalt, during the match against ULM, helped set outside hitter Janell Fitzgerald, who finished with 16 kills and no attack errors on a .533 percentage. The following night, DeWalt recorded 48 assists in a four-set win at Louisiana. The 48-assist performance was the third-highest assist total for DeWalt this season and her 10th match this season with 40-or-more assists. DeWalt also finished with her 66th career double-double after having 48 assists and 13 digs against Louisiana. She totaled four blocks and 2.67 digs per set on the week.
