Southern Miss men’s golf coach Eddie Brescher announced the signing of three players for the 2022-23 season, including graduate transfer Cameron Clarke (Pittsboro, Miss.) and incoming freshmen Tommy Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) and Walker Wise (Tupelo, Miss.).
“Losing five seniors after this season will certainly hurt our program,” said Brescher. “There will be some big shoes to fill. However, we have the majority of our starting lineup coming back for two-plus years after this season. That in itself is very encouraging. Then consider the three players we signed, and you can see why the future of our golf program is very bright. Everyone should be as excited as I am with Southern Miss Golf. We have some of the best players in the world currently in our program and multiple top players joining our program. Very exciting times ahead.”
Clarke, a three-time Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll selection at Mississippi State, posted a 74.15 average over 60 career rounds for the Bulldogs. Clarke enjoyed a second-place finish at the 2021 Mississippi Amateur, while in 2020, he registered a championship in the Grenada Invitational and also tied for fourth in the Magnolia Amateur and tied for fifth in the Mississippi Amateur. He also was the champion of both the Mississippi Open and Tupelo Amateur champion in 2018.
“Cameron is such a talented veteran,” said Brescher. “He has competed against the best amateur golfers from all over the world for many years now. When he came available, we knew he would fit in perfectly with our program here at Southern Miss. He is a proven winner at every level in his golf career and that will definitely help our program next year. Although we only get him for one season, it will be an absolute pleasure to have Cameron join our team as a veteran leader.”
Latter, the younger brother of current Golden Eagle Robbie Latter, comes to Southern Miss from the Lorne Park Secondary School. During 2021, Latter posted a 74.21 scoring average, earning a third-place showing at the Ontario Tour Championship and a 10th-place finish in the Orlando International Junior. He won the Innisbrook Christmas Junior and finished third in the Canadian Junior Golf Association Work Junior Challenge in 2020, while placing second in the 2019 Ontario Junior Match Play.
“I have been watching Tommy compete for years and he brings a wealth of experience to our program,” said Brescher. “Tommy has competed in a national and international junior golf schedule for his entire career. Taking his game on the road to face some of the best international competition is exactly what we are looking for in players. Once Tommy arrives to Hattiesburg, he will possess the experience of having to perform on courses he has not seen. Given this experience, we feel confident he will be ready to go from day one.”
Wise, a product of Tupelo High School, helped his team win the 2021 MHSAA Class 6A state championship, while also earning individual medalist honors. His tournament average in 2021 is 73.64 as he had finished second in both the Mississippi Junior and SJGT Mossy Oak event. In 2020, he won the Pros of Tomorrow and finished second in the SJGT event at Gulf Shores.
“Walker is one of the best players in the state of Mississippi It is always our goal to have home grown players of his talent level join our program. He has proven that his talents can win over a period of multiple years. We look forward to working with Walker to further develop his game and help our program win future tournaments.”
