Makenzie Maher scored in the 57th minute helping the Southeastern Louisiana University women’s soccer team to a 1-1 tie against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday night at Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer and Track Stadium.
The Lady Lions (2-5-1, 1-2-1 Southland) played the final 10:24 of regulation and both overtime periods with just 10 players as sophomore Haylli Roe received her second yellow card on a tackle resulting in a disqualification.
The Islanders (3-5-2, 1-1-2 Southland) took the lead in the first half when Megan Guy scored on a double assist from Maggie Murray and Samantha Palomino in the 12th minute.
Despite the deficit, SLU hung tough as goalkeeper Nadine Maher had five first-half saves, nine for the match, to keep the Lady Lions within striking distance.
In the 57th minute, M. Maher put the Lady Lions on the board as she got a perfect cross from senior Jamie Raines right in front of the A&M-Corpus Christ net. Maher, the sophomore from Denham Springs, Louisiana, did the rest as she punched it in to the bottom right corner of the net tying the match for her team-leading four goal of the season.
Despite playing short-handed the final 30:24 of the match, the Lady Lions played step-for-step with the Islanders as they outshot their counterparts 5-3 in the overtime periods.
‘We made some changes at halftime to chase the game,” said fifth-year SLU head coach Chris McBride. “But playing 30 minutes with 10 players and a player down, we really battled and did a good job to stay in the game and give ourselves a chance to win so overall I’m proud of the collective effort of the team.”
A&M-Corpus Christi finished the match with 17 shots to 16 for the Lady Lions. The Islanders had 10 shots on goal while the Lady Lions had seven on target.
The match also featured its share of physicality as 21 total fouls were called, 14 against the Islanders and seven against the Lady Lions.
