For the second time in as many weeks, Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball player Cicily Hidalgo was named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week. The Southland’s weekly awards are presented by GEICO.

Hidalgo helped lead SLU (2-10, 1-0 SLC) to a pair of wins this past week, defeating Southern Miss, 15-25, 27-29, 25-20, 25-17, 15-9, in non-conference action and then opening up Southland play with a dominating win at Northwestern State, 25-22, 25-13, 18-25, 25-19.

The freshman from Opelousas, Louisiana hit .273 at Southern Miss on the way to becoming the first Southland player in nearly five seasons to record 30 kills. She is also the first Lady Lion to accomplish the feat in at least 18 seasons.

Hidalgo backed up that phenomenal effort with 20 kills and a .308 attack percentage at Northwestern State and has now recorded 20 or more kills in four consecutive matches. She turned in double-doubles in both matches, her fourth and fifth of the season, averaging 2.56 digs per set this past week.

The Lady Lions’ top offensive threat, Hidalgo sits atop the Southland charts with 194 kills and 11.00 attacks per set. She ranks in the Top 50 nationally in both total attacks (33rd) and kills (48th).

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.

UP NEXT

The Lady Lions continue conference action this week with a pair of road matches. SLU travels to preseason conference-favorite Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (5-7, 1-0 SLC) for a 6:30 p.m. match Thursday and then on to San Antonio, Texas for a 1:30 p.m. match Saturday at UIW (5-10, 0-1 SLC).
