Havana Johnson scored in the 54th minute as McNeese defeated the Southeastern Louisiana University women’s soccer team, 1-0, Sunday night at Cowgirl Field.

The Lady Lions (1-5, 0-2 Southland) were outshot, 19-7, by McNeese (5-2-1, 2-0 Southland) as SLU dropped their second straight conference match by a 1-0 score.

Early on, the two teams came out with stifling defense as just nine shots were attempted in the first 45 minutes bringing the match to a scoreless first half. The Cowgirls attempted seven to two for the Lady Lions.

The action picked up in the second half as Nadine Maher made a terrific diving save to deny Anna Watson in the 51st minute.

However, the Cowgirls would cash in moments later for the match’s only goal when Johnson scored from an awkward angle from Maher’s left side. The shot trickled past Maher just inside the post for the goal.

Just like Friday night, the Lady Lions did not throw in the towel as they went on the attack. SLU’s Lexie Gundersen created a nice opportunity for the Lady Lions as she played a cross in front of the net to Makenzie Maher. However, the shot sailed just above the cross bar.

The best opportunity of the match for SLU came in the 81st minute. Gundersen’s shot from inside the box was saved by McNeese goalkeeper Jackie Kelly. Junior Mya Guillory recovered the loose ball and her shot sailed high as the Cowgirls hung on to edge the Lady Lions.

McNeese finished with nine shots on goal to three for the Lady Lions. The Cowgirls had three corner kicks while SLU had two.

Watson led the Cowgirls with eight shots while Johnson finished with four. The Lady Lions were led by Claire Huston with two. Nadine Maher tallied eight saves for SLU as well.

“It was a tough game tonight,” said SLU head coach Chris McBride. “McNeese played a very good game. Their shape causes problems and they made their chances count.”

The Lady Lions will remain in Beaumont, Texas where they’ve been since Wednesday, Sept. 1 following the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. Then, the Lady Lions will travel to Houston, Texas Thursday night at 7 p.m. to face Houston Baptist (0-5-2, 0-0-1 Southland).
