The Southeastern Louisiana University women’s soccer team begins Southland Conference play this weekend as they take on Northwestern State Friday at 6 p.m. in Natchitoches, Louisiana and McNeese Sunday night at 6 p.m. in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

The Lady Lions (1-3) are coming off a tough loss to UL Lafayette, 3-2, Friday on the road. Despite the loss, SLU’s Mya Guillory and Makenzie Maher each scored their eighth career goals pushing the Ragin’ Cajuns, their in-state counterparts, to the brink.

SLU enters conference play Friday against Northwestern State (0-3-2) in search of their first road win of the young season. However, the Lady Lions have faced stiff competition away from Strawberry Stadium with their non-conference road opponents boasting a combined 18-5 record.

Maher, a sophomore, enters the weekend leading the Lady Lions in goals (3) and shots (9) while Guillory and Ellie Williams each have netted two.

Defensively, the Lady Lions have been challenged early in the season facing 68 shots in four matches with the help of SLU goalkeeper Nadine Maher with 23 saves.

As for Friday, SLU and Northwestern State (0-3-2) are picked to finish first and second in the league. The Lady Lions and Lady Demons have played four straight matches where goals were at a premium. NSU has won the regular season matchup three years in a row by the same 1-0 score with two of them coming in overtime. Southeastern won the last matchup in the Southland Tournament back on April 13 of this year in a penalty kick shootout.

NSU is led by first team preseason All-Southland goalkeeper Acelya Aydogmus. The reigning Southland Conference Keeper of the Year, Aydogmus finished 2020 with nine shutouts allowing just six goals in 14 matches and leads the Southland in saves thus far in 2021 with 38.

Sunday, SLU will make the two and a half hour track south to take on McNeese (3-2-1) in Lake Charles. The Lady Lions edged McNeese, 2-1, last year in Hammond as Mya Guillory scored in the 73rd minute off a corner kick assist from Claire Huston. Southeastern leads the all-time series 20-9-5 but the Cowgirls have won the last two matches in Lake Charles.

Live video and stats will be available for both Friday and Sunday’s matches with links to both matches available at the Southeastern women’s soccer schedule page at LionSports.Net.
