Southern Miss continued its preseason preparations for its football season opener next Saturday at South Alabama with a Wednesday morning practice at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.

The Golden Eagles continue to work towards the South Alabama game, Saturday, Sept. 4, as the squad opens its 105th season of football.

One area of concern for first-year coach Will Hall when he put his squad through 15 practices in the spring was the running back position. As the Golden Eagles are now through almost through three weeks of preseason practice, that concern has become a thing of the past with the depth shown the fall.

“Frank (Gore, Jr.) has had a great camp, Darius Maberry is one of the most improved players on our team and you can see the talent in Dajon Richard – everyday he comes with us he learns the offense a little bit better – while Dee Baker has really come on, bringing a lot of speed and has gotten more tougher and more physical,” said Hall. “We went from that being a really worried about position out of spring ball to where we think that is a four-deep spot of guys that can play.”

The Golden Eagles have also begun putting in some work toward South Alabama but most of the practice still focused on getting the team ready for the season.

“We started switching yesterday at the end of practice and at the beginning of practice today we worked on South Al,” said Hall. “And then we kept our blades sharp in the middle. That’s about it.”
