Grand Canyon University scored in the 21st, 29th and 52nd minute defeating the Southeastern Louisiana University women’s soccer team, 3-0, Thursday night at GCU Stadium in Phoenix.
The Lady Lions (0-1), despite being outshot 22-3, put enough pressure on GCU to allow just six shots on goal. Nadine Maher, the 2020 Southland Conference Tournament MVP, had three saves including a diving stop in the first half.
GCU (1-0) is now 7-1-1 in their last nine matches dating back to last season. The Lopes, who returned all 11 starters from last year’s WAC Tournament semifinalist team, kept the offensive pressure on the Lady Lions for both halves. GCU fired off 13 shots in the first half and nine in the second half in picking up the win.
Marleen Shimmer, a preseason All-WAC selection, lead all players with seven shots and assisted on the Lopes’ second goal. GCU got goals from Lindsey Prokop (21st minute), Dani Babb (29th) and Jaycee Iranshad (52nd).
For SLU, their best scoring opportunity came in the 59th minute. Senior Mia Milton got a one-on-one break and attempted a shot on target from 10 yards out. However, GCU keeper Jordan Ferguson knocked it away for one of her two saves in the match to thwart the Lady Lions’ scoring threat.
Next up, the Lady Lions will take on Arizona State Sunday night at 9 p.m. CT in Tempe, Ariz. Fans can watch Sunday’s contest as live video links are available at the Southeastern soccer schedule page at LionSports.Net.
