The Washington Parish Animal Shelter and Tractor Supply Company are hosting “Cupcakes and Canines,” which will take place on Friday, Sept. 3, from noon to 6 p.m. It will be held at the shelter, located at 23046 YACC Road, just off Louisiana Highway 10 between Bogalusa and Franklinton.

The event is part of “Clear the Shelters Month” that runs from Aug. 23 through Sept. 19.

“NBC (the news organization) promotes Clear the Shelters Month to help get all sheltered animals adopted,” said Kelsey Knight, manager of the Washington Parish Shelter. “They usually clear adoption fees or have half off of adoption fees. We work with The Greater Good Charities. That is our transport organization. They’re helping out this year and last year.

“This is the first year our shelter will be part of it and it’s also co-sponsored with Tractor Supply Company. We work with the ones in Franklinton and Bogalusa. Since the shelter is of a smaller caliber, we don’t have a way to have the shelter open everyday during the event to promote Clear the Shelters, so we are doing this event to create a day for the public to see the animals from our shelter and the other shelters of Washington Parish.”

During the event, there will be free “pupcakes.” Each person that comes by will be able to make a pupcake with their dog or cat.

They will have their low-cost vaccine clinic running while supplies last.

There will also be “Paint a Paw,” where you can paint the bottom of your dog’s paw, put it on a canvas and take that home.

The Washington Parish Animal Shelter is looking for vendors. Food for the public will be available. Tractor Supply Company will also have a representative at the event. Owners can get a free microchip for their animal.

The shelter is also part of the Save a Heart Program, which is transport for dogs with heartworms to receive treatment. The Save a Heart Program is part of the Greater Good Charities.
