The Southern Miss football team started the new week by returning to the game field in M.M. Roberts Stadium Monday morning.

First-year coach Will Hall, whose team went through their ninth practice of fall camp, said that the defense enjoyed a solid day and also continued to praise the running back and tight end groups for their play during the last couple of weeks.

“It was good to get back out here coming from an off day,” said Hall. “It was a really physical day in the run game and our defense brought great energy and intensity early on today. Our fullbacks and tight ends did too as I saw them leading up in there with some power (run scheme) and hitting.”

Hall liked seeing that out of his defense as the Golden Eagles head into their first scrimmage Tuesday morning at The Rock.

“All in all, our defense brought a lot of energy and juice today and that was good to see,” said Hall. “We just have to keep going. We have a huge scrimmage tomorrow which will be great to see. We will put the ball down and let every kid play. The coaches won’t be on the field, so that will go a long way in determining who is going to be on that travel squad.”

Heading into the scrimmage, there is no magic formula that Hall wants in the team’s first full team scrimmage.

“I want to see who can tackle, who can break tackles, who can block and who can get off the block,” said Hall. “We aren’t trying to trick each other tomorrow. This is going to be who can line up and whip somebody and who can make somebody miss. We aren’t looking for tricks, we are looking to see who can play the best football.”

This preparation continues as Southern Miss heads toward its 105th season and opening game at South Alabama on Saturday, Sept. 4.
