The Southeastern Louisiana University women’s soccer team gained valuable experience in Wednesday’s scrimmage as 22 players saw at least 30 minutes or more of playing time in a 2-0 loss to LSU.
The Lady Lions, the reigning Southland Tournament Champions, looked sharp early on getting two shots on goal while the defense turned away two separate LSU attacking opportunities.
Southeastern stood up against a lot of pressure from LSU as they faced 18 shots including 10 in the second half not allowing a goal in the final 60 minutes. SLU women’s soccer head coach Chris McBride was more than pleased with his team’s efforts.
“That was a great exhibition for us,” said McBride. “LSU plays some really good soccer. They’re really quick, athletic and physical. And that’s the kind of game you want to prepare you for the season. So it was great to see some of our players get on the field that we didn’t get to see last year because of injuries. We also got to see players in different areas of the field but that was a really good scrimmage. I really enjoyed that and the most important thing is the ladies enjoyed getting back on the field and competing again which was big for us. We’re really happy with the performance and the preparation it will give us for opening weekend.”
Southeastern, the 2021 Preseason Southland Conference favorites, will turn attention to next week’s season opening weekend when they head to Phoenix, Arizona to take on Grand Canyon University Thursday, Aug. 19 at 9 p.m. CT. The Lady Lions will wrap up the weekend with a matchup against Arizona State Sunday, Aug. 22 at 9 p.m. CT
