VHS’s Washington, Pine’s Brown win event in district

Varnado’s Zamoriyon Washington and Pine’s Cameron Brown won an event each and several more locals qualified for regionals at the District 9-2A Meet that was held on Thursday at Ponchatoula.

Washington on the 100 meters, while Brown took the discus.

Washington ran the 100 in 11.33 seconds. Kentwood’s Jermaine Brown was second at 11.43.

Cameron Brown topped the discus with a throw of 120 feet, 1 inch. Teammate Adrianuen Johnson qualified for regionals by coming in third at 97-9. Kentwood’s Shacobe Dyson was second with a distance of 114-3.

Thursday’s meet was a qualifier. The top four finishers from each event are headed to the 3-2A Regional that will take place on Tuesday at Southeastern Louisiana University.

Varnado teammates Washington and Jarvis James were second in events.

Washington was runner-up in the 200 with a time of 23.94. Kentwood’s Brown won in 22.94.

James was second in the 800 after running in it 2 minutes, 14 seconds. Kentwood’s Shemar Cooper won in 2:12.

Pine’s Brown and Varnado’s Malik Patterson were third and fourth for the shot put with distances of 42-6 and 41-6 respectively. Dyson won at 44-9.

Cameron Brown and Varnado’s Quovadis Bickham were third in events.

Brown was third in the javelin with a throw of 105-3, while Bickham took third for the triple jump at 40-6.25. Kentwood teammates Jer’michael Carter and Carmel Taylor won the javelin and triple jump with distances of 136-9 and 42-6.5 respectively.

Varnado teammates Bickham and Devonte Magee qualified in the high jump and long jump respectively with each coming in fourth.

Bickham high jumped 5-6, while Magee long jumped 18-9. Amite’s Richard Sopsher and St. Helena College and Career Academy’s Deshon SIngleton tied for tops at 5-10. The tiebreaker is fewest misses, so Sopsher was first and Singleton was second. Carter won the long jump at 20-1.

Also locally, Johnson came in fifth in the shot put and javelin with distances of 36-11 and 94-9 respectively.

Pine’s Averyon Wiley, Varnado’s James and Pine’s Samuel Thomas were fifth, sixth and 10th in the long jump at 18-7, 18-2.5 and 15-3.

Magee took fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 36-3.5.

Pine’s Albert Caillouet ran sixth in the 800 in 2:37.

Patterson, Wiley and Ian Beltran came in seventh, ninth and 10th in the 100 with times of 12.14, 13.72 and 13.15.

Thomas and James came in sixth and eighth for the 400, clocking in at 1:02 and 1:06.

Pine’s Aiden Mcintosh was 10th in the 200 with a 27.53.

Kentwood won the team competition with 212 points, as six schools posted points.

St. Helena College and Career Academy was second with 85, followed by Varnado’s 47, Amite’s 45 and Pine’s 36.
