The Bayou Lacombe Cardinals moved to 3-0 on the season with a convincing 28-8 road win in Petal, Miss. Saturday night.

After forcing the Hellcats into turning the ball over on downs on Hub City’s first possession, Bayou Lacombe took advantage of good field possession early in the contest.

The Cardinals drove 38 yards on four plays for the score at the 9:55 mark of the first quarter. Quarterback Denizel Ladner (Covington High) hit running back Michael Mercadel (Chalmette High) out of the backfield for the four-yard touchdown reception. Kicker Lance Foster (Duncanville High) added the extra point putting Bayou Lacombe ahead 7-0.

Hub City came right back on their ensuing possession and drove 61 yards on 11 plays. The Hellcats grabbed the lead when quarterback George Bolton connected with wide receiver Joshua Campbell on a 26 yard scoring pass. After a Bolton to Campbell two-point conversion, Hub City led 8-7 with 17 seconds remaining in the second.

Bayou Lacombe looked to regain the lead after driving to the Hellcat 27. Hub City’s defense stiffened and forced a 44-yard field goal attempt by kicker Donald Gonzales (Rutherford High) that fell just short. Hub City appeared poised to add to their lead late in the second quarter.
