Franklinton’s Ashlyn Welch has signed a letter of intent to attend Louisiana College and play softball for the Lady ‘Cats.

“There is a real good church up there and I’ve got family up there,” Welch said. “It’s a Christian College. I love the coach. I like the field up there. It’s a small college, so I could get more playing time. I could also go there for four years for nursing and not five like in most colleges. They work with you. The team has a few nursing majors on it and they can balance it, so I think I’d definitely be able to balance nursing and softball.”

Welch said she gives God all of the glory.

In 2019, Welch posted .321 batting average, .522 on base percentage and a .427 slugging.

The year before, Welch, a center fielder, had a .391 batting average with a .459 on base percentage and a .422 slugging percentage.
Welch was a first-team all-district player both of those years, which were her freshman and sophomore seasons.

Most of last season was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Outstanding leader,” Franklinton coach Leslie McGhee said. “She works hard. She does extra. No matter if practice is over at 5 or 6, she’s always finding something else to do like hitting or fielding. Whatever she can get extra on, she’s going to do it like getting somebody to hit fly balls to her or hitting in the cage. She’s always something extra to make herself better. She’s not only good on the field with sports, but in her community. She’s involved with so much in Beta Club and Christian values. She’s that leader and people look up to her.”

Besides playing softball, Welch also plays soccer for Franklinton. She is a striker in soccer.

Welch has a 4.09 grade point average with 12 hours of college credit and she is a member of Beta Club and Student Council. Welch is president of student council.
