Varnado’s Wildcats defeated Loranger, 12-7, in a scrimmage held Friday on the road.

Jaheim Hooks led the Wildcats with 75 yards on the ground. He also threw two touchdown passes.

The scoring passes went to Zyquantay Bickham and Tyler Whitfield for 28 and 13 yards, respectively.

Zamarion Washington ran for 56 yards and Malik Patterson rushed for 43.

The teams played basically a regular game with four 12-minute quarters with varsity and junior varsity each playing half. There will be no special teams.

“Last week’s scrimmage was a good scrimmage,” Varnado coach Milton Green said. “We were able to see what we can do with new players. We executed pretty good, but there are a lot of mistakes we need to clean up. We played a bigger school and that was part of it. I’m proud of my boys for working hard in the short time we had in the offseason.”

Varnado opens the season on Friday at home against East Iberville.

“We have a hard task this week in East Iberville,” Green said. “I think they’re ranked in the polls. They have 17 seniors returning from a team that went to the quarterfinals last year, but that’s why they play the games. They will be a challenge, but if we keep lifting and working hard, we’ll be alright.”

East Iberville reached the Class 1A quarterfinals last year before state runner up White Castle defeated them 14-0. East Iberville went 7-2 in the regular season.

Varnado’s week game two is at home against Slaughter Community Charter.
