Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

At the age of 91, Mr. Gary Burris transitioned to his heavenly home on June 26, 2020, surrounded by his family.

He attended Sweet Home Church of Christ Holiness USA where his parents instilled in him the love of Christ and the importance of family. He maintained his membership there and cherished the teachings he received under the leadership of various pastors.

He spread his knowledge and his love for history by teaching in Magnolia, Miss., at Washington Parish High School, Vernon School and Franklinton High School. Gary’s passion for teaching continued to transpire until he eventually retired from the State of Mississippi and the State of Louisiana in 1988.

He leaves to continue his legacy, his son, Gregory (Helen) Burris Sr.; his love will always be felt by his three grandchildren, Marquita Burris, Gregory Burris Jr. and Ishmeal Burris; and three great-grandchildren, Demarquis Smith, Brianna Landix and Kaleb Causey. Gary’s lasting memories will forever be with his only surviving brother and sister-in-law, Royan and Brenda Burris; two special nieces, Barbara “Jennette” Waynick of Long Beach, Calif., and Bronis Pittman of Franklinton; a special grandson, Toric Magee; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Issac and Vanda Burris; his siblings, Marvin, Willie J, Mary, Ollie, Cleo, Walter and Lucius; and his wife, Leona Burris.

A drive-thru viewing will be held Wednesday, July 1, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Crain and Sons in Franklinton.

Funeral service will be on Thursday, July 2, for 11 a.m. at Sweet Home Church of Christ Holiness with Elder Kevin Golden, pastor, and Apostle Dalask Dillion, eulogist. Interment will be in the Sweet Home Church Cemetery.
