Plenty of locals compete at in PJP Invitational

SLIDELL — Eight power lifters that attend schools in Washington Parish and three more from Bogalusa, who go to Pope John Paul II, competed in the Pope John Paul II Invitational on Saturday.
Pine’s Braeden Arceneaux, Bogalusa’s Derek Keating and Pope John Paul II’s Josh Gulczynski, a Bogalusa resident, were top-five finishers in their weight classes at Saturday’s meet.
Arceneaux was fourth in the 114.5-pound weight class after totaling 595 pounds between squat, bench and deadlift. Arceneaux squatted 225, benched 95 and deadlifted 275.
St. Paul’s School’s Zach Montz won with an 830 total.
Keating was fifth for the 275.5s. Keating posted a total of 1,110 with a 435 squat, 285 bench and 390 deadlift.
Pope John Paul II lifter and Bogalusa resident Matthew Kirkland was 15th with a 675, after squatting 235, benching 150 and deadlifting 280.
Slidell’s Miguel Reyes won the 275.5s with a 1,455 total.
Gulczynski was fourth in the 132.3s with an 890 total. He squatted 300, benched 185 and deadlifted 405.
Three local athletes competed in the 148.8s in Bogalusa teammates Tommy Duong and Kevin Wells and Varnado’s Malik Patterson.
Duong led the group with a sixth-place finish after lifting a 960 total. He had a 320 squat, 245 bench and 395 deadlift.
Wells was eighth with a 915. He squatted 305, benched 255 and deadlifted 355.
Patterson came in 12th, recording an 815. He had a 270 squat, 195 bench and 350 deadlift.
Archbishop Rummel’s Nicholas Palermo, who was the Most Outstanding Lifter for the 114-165 pound weight classes, won the 148.8s with a 1,200 total.
Varnado’s Christian Fox took ninth in the 198.3s with a 930 total. Fox had a 350 squat, 230 bench and 350 deadlift.
Pope John Paul II’s Kale McDaniel, a Bogalusa resident, was 13th at 700 after a 225 squat, 160 bench and 215 deadlift.
Slidell’s Tyrese Thompson was victorious at 1,355.
Bogalusa’s Julien Hampton finished 11th for the 181.8s after squatting 240, benching 185 and deadlifting 335 for 760 total.
Slidell’s Daison Faciane topped the weight class with a 1,290 total.
Varnado’s T’Andrew Foster was 14th in the 165.3s with a 790 total. He squatted 275, benched 165 and deadlifted 350.
St. Paul’s School’s Jackson Luschy won at 1,280.
Slidell’s Cameron Williams, who lifts in the 220.3-pound weight class, was the Most Outstanding Lifter for the 181-super heavyweight weight classes. He won the 220.3s after lifting a total of 1,505.
Bogalusa’s next meet will take place on Saturday, Feb. 1 at Salmen. Franklinton will also be in that meet.
Varnado will be back in action at the regionals that take place Feb. 28-29 at Pope John Paul II.
Arceneaux will compete again on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Central Catholic in Morgan City.
