Tough 2nd quarter hurts Eagles in loss

The second quarter of Tuesday’s game hurt Ben’s Ford in a 68-39 loss to Centreville Academy in a home game held Monday.
“Our defense wasn’t very good, we gave up (26) points. We put them on the line and they made all of their free throws and we only scored (eight) points and then we put ourselves in a bad situation because our defense wasn’t very good. I thought we fought hard in the first quarter, but we just unfortunately didn’t play very good defense in the second quarter, and after that, it was hard for us to cut back into the lead,” Ben’s Ford Christian School coach Landon Tims said.
The Eagles trailed by just two after the first quarter at 16-14, but Centreville outscored Ben’s Ford, 26-8, in the second quarter to open up a 42-22 lead by halftime.
Centreville scored the second period’s first 15 points.
Jeff Carroll hit a bucket and got fouled 45 seconds into the quarter. Carroll missed the free throw, but Centreville go the rebound and Ben Garrett made a layup to make it a six-point game. Jaden Morris scored the next five points. He had a backcourt steal followed by a layup and then hit a 3-pointer from the right corner for a 25-14 lead at the 6:21 mark. Carroll made a trio of free throws after being fouled on a 3-pointer and then Garrett hit a 3-pointer to give Centreville a 31-14 lead with 4:31 to go in the first half.
John Robert Holston hit the front end of a 1-and-1 to stop the run. It was 31-15 with 4:23 left and 42-22 at halftime.
Ben’s Ford was only able to get the lead to 44-27 with 5:26 left in the third quarter, but Centreville extended the lead to 59-32 at the end of the period in the 68-39 win.
A.J. Exkano was Ben’s Ford’s top scorer with 12 points. He also pulled down seven rebounds, dished out two assists and made two steals.
Holston tallied eight points, three boards, an assist and one steal.
John Eric Self had five points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Jonah Holston recorded five points, two rebounds and an assist.
Jonah Williams posted four points and two boards.
Nate Descant had four points and a pair of steals.
Sam Peters tallied two points and nine rebounds.
Cameron Bullen and Micaiah Rosa tallied three rebounds each and Joseph Williams had one.
Carroll led Centreville with 19 points.
Morris and Caleb Kinabrew posted 11 each.
Tucker Lobrano and Ben Garrett had seven each while Nick Parrish tallied five, Jacob Medina put up four and Jake Rushing and Cody Boeta added two each.
On Tuesday, Ben’s Ford suffered a 76-22 loss to Columbia Academy in the district opener.
Holston tallied eight points, two rebounds five steals and he blocked a shot.
Jonah Williams posted six points, a rebound and a steal.
Gage Adams recorded six points and a board.
Rosa had two points and a rebound.
Peters pulled down six boards and he blocked a shot, while Bullen grabbed two rebounds and made a steal, Exhano, Self and Descant all posted a rebound and a steal and Joseph Williams and Jonah Holston tallied a rebound each.
Ben’s Ford’s next game is against Bowling Green School on Dec. 3.
