The Varnado High School Wildcats hosted the Independence High School Tigers Friday, losing 28-0. The Wildcats went into the game after a loss to St. Helena last week.

It was a rough first half for the Wildcats, as they gave up 20 points to the Tigers. With 2 minutes left in the first quarter, the Wildcats fumbled at their own 9-yard-line. Tiger quarterback Darionite Ginn took full advantage of the error and kept the ball himself. Ginn pushed through the line and scored the first touchdown of the game. The Tiger attempted the two-point conversion with a quarterback keep, but the Wildcats held them back and the score was 6-0 at the end of the first.

At the start of the second quarter and back in possession, Varnado quarterback Zyquantay Bickham threw a pass meant for Zantonio Peters from the 20-yard-line. The pass was intercepted by Elijah Zanders and returned for the Tigers’ second touchdown. Ginn attempted the two-point conversion with a handoff to Fred McDowell, but he couldn’t break through the line and the score went to 12-0 with eleven minutes left in the half.

Later, with 20 seconds left in the half, Ginn passed to Markendrick Andrews from the Varnado 16 into the end zone for the third and final touchdown of the half. Ginn was successful in the two-point attempt with a second pass to Andrews and the score was 20-0 at halftime.

The second half had both teams’ defenses on high alert. Neither team was able to score in the third quarter.

At the top of the fourth, Ginn and the Tigers were able to finish off a four-play drive with a pitch back from Ginn to Darrian Robertson from the Wildcats’ 35-yard-line. Robertson ran up the right side and into the end zone for the fourth and final touchdown of the game. Ginn handed off to David Beauchamp, who pushed through the line for the two-point conversion, to make the final score 28-0 in favor of the Tigers.

Varnado will host Pine next week in the Wildcats’ final game of the regular season.
