Former Pine golfer ties for 17th in tournament

William Carey University freshman Tanner McKenzie tied for 17th at the Redhawk Invitational in Athens, Ala.
McKenzie tied seven others for 17th place, including Loyola of New Orleans’ Jack Dixon, Georgia Military College teammates Dylan Humphries and Noah Hankins, Freed-Hardeman’s Drew Taylor, Mobile University’s Noah Martino, Columbia International’s Kyle Olenchuck and Blue Mountain College’s Oliver Merritt.
McKenzie, a 2019 Pine graduate, and the others tallied a 148 for the two-day tournament that was held Oct. 7-8. McKenzie recorded rounds of 76 and 72.
Loyola of New Orleans’ Carter Nicholson won the tournament with a 137 by two strokes over Mobile University’s Noah Whittington in a field of 54.
Martin Methodist’s Amalio Vega’s 140 was third with Mobile University’s J. Michael Riley’s 141 and Georgia Military College’s Austin Quillian to round out the top five with a 142.
William Carey’s “A” team was second in the team competition and their “B” team was 10th. McKenzie was the Crusaders’ leading golfer on the “B” team.
Mobile University finished in first place at 575, with 10 teams competing.
William Carey’s “A” team was six strokes behind at 581.
Georgia Military was third at 582, followed by Martin Methodist’s 583 and Loyola of New Orleans’ 584.
