Varnado’s Wildcats were defeated by defending Class 2A state champion Amite, 55-0, in Friday’s road game.
“Our heads were still down from last week against Bogalusa (13-6 the Friday before their game against Amite),” Varnado coach Milton Green said. “Amite came prepared. They didn’t let their guard down. It was their homecoming. The score doesn’t indicate what happened Friday night. We had opportunities.
“We gave Amite good field position all night. They were physically stronger than us. We’re just having first-year woes. We want to set our standards to their level and they showed us what we need to do to get better. It all starts in the weight room.”
Korterrius Mingo ran for 90 yards for Varnado.
Varnado will be back in action against Kentwood on the road Thursday in a District 9-2A matchup in their league opener.
Kentwood, which won the Class 1A state title last year, is 3-3. Kentwood defeated Independence, 35-14, last week.
