Youth basketball league starting in Bogalusa

A new basketball league is getting under way in Bogalusa.

The Bogalusa Youth Basketball League will start in December and registration begins this month.

Derek Dantin, who is Ben’s Ford Christian School’s athletic director and assistant girls basketball coach, is the league director.

Helping out with the league are Mike Keen, Ken Martin and Landon Tims.

Keen is a fireman, he is on the YMCA Board and is a coach at Annunciation Catholic School.

Martin is a former longtime basketball coach at Bogalusa and served as athletic director for the Lumberjacks.

Tims is the head boys basketball coach at Ben’s Ford Christian School and City Parks and Recreation Director in Bogalusa.

The league is open for boys and girls ages 4-12. There are three age groups — 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12.

Signups take place on Saturdays Oct. 12, 26 and Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. until noon

Beginning on Monday, Oct. 14, you can register at the YMCA everyday from 2 p.m. through 7 p.m.

Games begin Dec. 7 and take place on Saturdays.

Tru Archery Team holding annual raffle

The TRU Archery Team, which is based out of Franklinton, is holding its annual raffle.

Tickets are a $2 donation.

The group is drawing for three prizes.

First place is two tickets to the LSU game against Arkansas that takes place Saturday, Nov. 23 at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge.

Second place is a Kyseck 25 quart ice chest.

Third place is a Covert Blackout Game Camera.

The raffle takes place on Saturday, Oct. 19 and the winner does not need to be present.

Washington Parish Fair 5K Race

The Washington Parish Fair 5K run/walk Race takes place on Saturday, Oct. 19 at the fairgrounds.

Raceday registration begins at 7 a.m. and the race gets started at 8 a.m.

Early signups end Oct. 13 and cost $20. Raceday registration is $25.

Medals are awarded to the top two finishers in each age group.

Participants get a T-shirt in a technical shirt format.

Age groups run from 18-under and then every 10 years through 70 and above.

Bowling Green Booster Club Golf Tournament

The Bowling Green School Football Booster Club is holding a golf tournament on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Franklinton Country Club.

The three-person scramble costs $100 per person.

The fee includes the tournament, lunch and a Calcutta auction during lunch

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the tournament starts at 10 a.m.

Sponsorships are also available for $100.

State parks adjust pool schedules for end of summer

The Louisiana Office of State Parks is adjusting the swimming pool schedules for the end of summer to ensure that certified lifeguards are present during pool operating hours. All pools closed for the season after Labor Day.

State Parks with water playgrounds, which includes Bogue Chitto in Franklinton, is open Tuesdays through Sundays through Oct. 31 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

State parks with designated beach swimming areas that includes Bogue Chitto, is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, but do not have lifeguard supervision.

Standard day-use admission is $3 per person and provides beach, pool, and water playground access.
