Bowling Green School’s Lady Buccaneers suffered a heart-breaking 6-4 loss to Clinton Christian Academy game one of the Class AAA Championship round.
The Lady Bucs were up 4-3 through six innings, but Clinton Christian Academy’s Makiya Hunter hit a three-run homer to put her team up by two.
The lead off hitter flew out to left centerfield. Maddie Weeks doubled off of the leftfield wall. Iris Farve, who homered earlier, was intentionally walked. Hunter came up with runners on first-and-second and belted a pitch to left centerfield that was gone for a three-run homer and CCA had a 6-4 lead after 6.5 innings.
Bowling Green’s Julia Berggren singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh, bringing the potential tying run to the plate, but the next two hitters were retired in the 6-4 contest.
“We were down, came back, they came back, tied it, we came back, went up one,” Bowling Green School coach David Hood Burris said. “If you would’ve told me (Tuesday) that we would go into the top of the seventh at home with a one-run lead, I would’ve took it 100 times out of 100, and unfortunately for us, we were at the big part of their lineup and you obviously can see what their lineup’s capable of. One mistake and that’s what happens.”
The best-of-three series continues Saturday at Hinds Community College. Game two of the series starts at 5 p.m. with game three, if necessary, following.
Every run in Tuesday’s except one was tallied via the home run.
Clinton Christian Academy got on the board first in the opening inning.
Hanna Zeitz reached on an error with one out. After the second out, Farve hit a line-drive homer to rightfield, giving CCA a 2-0 lead.
It stayed that way until the third.
Morgan Carpenter was Bowling Green’s first base runner with a leadoff single to center. Following the first out, Berggren was hit by a pitch. Landry Dupont was next and she hit a ball high and deep to centerfield and gone. It was a three-run homer and the Lady Buccaneers had a 3-2 lead.
It was 3-2 until the fifth inning when Zeitz led off the frame with a home run to leftfield, tying the game at 3-3.
Bowling Green countered in the bottom of the frame and went back in front.
KaKa Seal singled, Berggren walked and Dupont was hit. Seal was forced out at home on a ball hit back to the pitcher. Cassidy Spears was next and she hit a sacrifice fly to rightfield that plated Berggren with the go-ahead run and Bowling Green was up 4-3.
