Varnado forced five turnovers and returned all of them for touchdowns in a 46-18 victory over Slaughter Community Charter at home Friday.
“The defense is playing lights out. They’ve all bought into the system and they’re all playing as one,” Varnado coach Milton Green said. “No one is playing as an individual and when everybody is playing their assignments, we can be tough to stop. With Trevin Haynes, Christian Matthews, Charlie Wash, Jaheim Hooks and Jaylen Peters, those guys are our leaders and when you start to build up a program, you have to start with the defensive side of the ball.”
Terryun Lewis and Haynes both returned an interception for a touchdown.
Matthews, Hooks and Zamarion Washington all had a fumble return for a score.
Hooks also tallied on a 45-yard touchdown reception from ZyQuantay Bickham.
Korterrius Mingo also scored a touchdown on a 65-yard run.
Varnado’s season continues on Friday when the Wildcats host Bogalusa.
