Varnado’s Wildcats suffered a 22-12 loss to East Iberville in a game held Friday on the road.
Varnado coach Milton Green said the Wildcats “left a lot of plays on the field,” after ending the game with 27 penalties.
Green said the defense forced five turnovers and held East Iberville under 100 yards total offense, but Varnado threw a pick-six and gave its opponent a short field after a muffed punt.
“Besides that, it was hard fought game and it’s just part of the rebuilding process of being in the first year in the program,” Green said.
Green said the Wildcats will be ready for their home game this Friday.
Green also credited East Iberville on being a good team, noting that they are Maxpreps’ No. 1 team in Class 1A.
Christian Matthews led the Wildcats in tackles with 12. Matthews had three stops for a loss, a pass breakup and an interception.
Charlie Wash made 10 stops, including two for a loss, and had a pair of passes defensed.
Trevin Haynes tallied eight tackles. Offensively, he made two receptions for 65 yards.
Jaheim Hooks posted six tackles, with three for a loss. Hooks also had 43 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Zamario Washington scored the other touchdown for the Wildcats.
Varnado will be back in action Friday against Slaughter Community Charter, to begin the first of two straight games at home.
