Varnado’s Wildcats were victorious over Thrive Academy, 44-0, on Thursday night at Olympia Stadium in Baton Rouge.
“We really came out kind of flat the first few minutes of the game,” Varnado first-year coach Milton Green said. “We had the first game jitters, first game nerves. We kind of played down to our competition, but we kicked it in. The work from Sunday and Monday paid off.
“The MTXE mentality (Mental Toughness Extra Effort) kicked in for our team and we executed pretty well that first series of the game. Hats off to Thrive Academy. They have a lot of individual talent. They have a lot of team speed. They are well coached by coach (Brian) Glover. They’re a young team and they have a bright future ahead of them.”
Varnado had a 32-0 at halftime before going on to the 44-0 win.
Kennis Loper ran for a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass.
Jaylen Peters had a rushing touchdown.
Zantonio Peters tallied a running touchdown and he intercepted two passes.
Jaheim Hooks III caught a touchdown pass.
Bubba Bickham threw a scoring pass.
Kim McGowan Jr. was on the receiving end of a touchdown pass.
Zamarion Washington tallied on a run.
Charlie Wash returned an interception for a touchdown.
Varnado’s next game is Friday, Sept. 13 against Crescent City in the Wildcats’ home opener.
