LHSAA regular season begins this week, MAIS enters week 3

The high school football season begins this week for LHSAA teams and continues for MAIS teams, as they enter week three of the 2019 season.
This week’s schedule features two home games and a Thursday game.
Varnado is on the road tomorrow while Pine and Ben’s Ford Christian School are at home and all other local teams are on the road on Friday.
Varnado vs. Thrive Academy
Varnado will open the season on the road Thursday against Thrive Academy.
The game will take place at Olympia Stadium in Baton Rouge.
Varnado comes into this week after a 12-6 win over Bogalusa in the 2019 Our Lady of Angels Hospital Washington Parish Jamboree on Friday at BHS.
Varnado scored on a pair of big plays in that game.
Kennis Loper completed a 61-yard pass to Trevin Haynes for the first tally and Darrius Harry recovered a fumble in the end zone off of a snap past the quarterback for the other.
The Wildcats tallied a 2-7 regular season record last year and were defeated in the first round of the Class 1A state playoffs, 28-12, by Sicily Island. Sicily Island made it to the regional round.
Thrive comes in after a 26-0 loss to East Feliciana in the Slaughter Charter Jamboree. This is Thrive Academy’s first year of varsity football.
Jewel Sumner at Pine
Pine will open this season with a home game against Jewel Sumner on Friday.
The Raiders are coming into 2019 after a 7-3 season in 2018. Pine made the Class 2A playoffs, but fell to Independence, 36-32, in the first round.
Pine played in the in the 2019 Our Lady of Angels Hospital Washington Parish Jamboree on Friday at Bogalusa High School and lost to Franklinton, 15-12.
Pine’s touchdowns against Franklinton came on the ground, as Adrianuen Johnson scored on 2-yard runs.
Jewel Sumner enters this year after also going 7-3. They were defeated in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs against Madison Prep, 24-20.
Sumner played in the Covington Jamboree and lost to St. Thomas Aquinas, 14-0.
Hebron Christian School at Ben’s Ford Christian School
Ben’s Ford Christian School will continue its season with a contest against Hebron Christian School at home.
Ben’s Ford comes in with a 1-1 record.
Last week, the Eagles lost to Wilkinson County Christian Academy, 41-24.
In that game, Daniel Martin led the Eagles with 120 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also threw for 68 yards. Martin ran for a pair of two-point conversions and threw another to Gage Adams.
Austin Stogner ran for 63 yards and Payton Miller had 31 yards and a score on the ground. Miller was the team’s leading tackler with five, as well as a sack.
John Robert Holston topped the receivers with four catches for 47 yards.
Hebron Christian School begins the week with an 0-2 record. Hebron lost to Calhoun Academy, 28-6, last week.
Franklinton at Covington
Franklinton will open 2019 against a familiar opponent in Covington in a road game.
The teams have met every year since 2006 and have begun the season against each other in each year since 2015.
Covington has won nine of the 13 contests since 2006, including the last four, and won last year’s 19-13 game.
Franklinton tallied a 4-6 record last year and reached the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs before losing to quarterfinalist St. Martinville, 55-42.
Franklinton played in the in the 2019 Our Lady of Angels Hospital Washington Parish Jamboree on Friday at Bogalusa High School and topped Pine, 15-12.
In the game, Jasper LaSalle threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Lambert and Quaran Warren, who also had a two-point conversion, ran a touchdown in from the 7. Keaton Catrett made an extra point in his only attempt.
Covington went 3-7 last season. The Lions defeated Salmen, 27-0, in the Covington Jamboree.
Bogalusa at Istrouma
Bogalusa will start the 2019 season by going on the road to play against Istrouma.
The Lumberjacks went 4-5 last year and were defeated in the opening round of the Class 3A state playoffs, 50-0, by quarterfinalist Union Parish.
Bogalusa hosted last week’s 2019 Our Lady of Angels Hospital Washington Parish Jamboree on Friday and came up short to Varnado, 12-6.
Bogalusa’s touchdown was on a Josh Taylor 21-yard run.
Istrouma competed in the EBR Kickoff Classic Jamboree at Broadmoor and was a 29-20 victor over Capitol. This is Istrouma’s first season of playing varsity football.
Bowling Green School at Amite School Center
Bowling Green School will have a road game against Amite School Center.
The Buccaneers come into this week with a 2-0 record after a 14-12 victory over Centreville Academy.
Bowling Green’s tallies came on a Kengie Gordon 2-yard run and a pass from Duke to Cade Knight from 15 yards out. Duke and Knight also connected for a two-point conversion.
Amite School Center comes in with a 1-2 record, following a 46-7 loss to Brookhaven Academy.
