Varnado and Tara played to a scoreless tie in a scrimmage that was held Friday at home.
The teams played series of plays and capped it off with a 12-minute quarter.
“We played a 4A school that was bigger and had more players,” Varnado coach Milton Green said. “We competed to the best of our ability. No score was kept, but we didn’t allow them to score. It was a 0-0 tie. Besides that, our kids played hard, they were flying to the ball and they were tackling.
“That was the best thing, our kids stepped up and played to that level of competition. I couldn’t be more proud of them. They’re still learning the offense and defense. Besides that, it was a good turnout from the fans and community.
“We appreciate the support from the fans, community and administration. All of the mistakes are fixable. I feel that now the kids have bought in and all we have to do is focus on one day at a time and getting better.”
Green said that the only bad part about the scrimmage was that they had a couple of injuries.
Christian Matthews led the Wildcats with six tackles. Charlie Wash was second with five stops.
Varnado will face off against Bogalusa in the second game of the 2019 Our Lady of Angels Hospital Washington Parish Jamboree on Friday.
The event begins at 6 p.m. with a game between Franklinton and Pine. Teams will play two 15-minute quarters.
