Lady Bucs’ Burris, Burch combine on shutout

Bowling Green School’s Kylee Burris and Madelyn Burch combined on a three-hit shutout and the offense continually tacked on runs in a 5-0 victory over Centreville Academy at home Monday.
Burris started and threw three innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts and two walks.
Burch took over to start the fourth and retired the first eight hitters she faced before Lacy Darden singled. Burch then got the next hitter to line out to end the sixth.
Burch went four innings and allowed two hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
“Kylee, of course, she induced a lot of groundballs, which we like. They feed our defense,” Bowling Green School coach David Hood Burris said. “We brought Madelyn in halfway through and we got a lot of swings-and-misses, strikeouts with her. It was a total effort by the staff as a whole.”
Offensively, the Lady Buccaneers did not have a big inning, but scored runs in four of them. The tallied a run in the even-numbered innings and two in the fifth.
“That’s our goal. I always tell our team that if we score one per inning, I feel confident enough in our pitching that we’re going to hold the other team to less runs than that,” coach Burris said. “If we just chip away, chip away and score one per inning, we’re going to be good doing that.”
Bowling Green took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Burch singled. There was a force out, and later in the inning, Abby Hodges recorded an RBI single, plating Morgan Carpenter with the game’s first run.
Bowling Green made it 2-0 in the fourth inning.
Dixie Camaille walked. Burch was next and she lined a double down the left-field line and Camaille scored for a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Buccaneers put up a pair of runs in the fifth.
Anna Claire Crowe walked and advanced to second and third on wild pitches before scoring when Burris, who was next, singled to left field. Later in the inning, Cassidy Spears scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.
In the sixth inning, Hannah Varnado walked. Landry Dupont put down a sacrifice bunt and reached on an error, but the runner coming from first was out during a rundown after going out of the baseline. Dupont went to second during the play before stealing third and posting the fifth run on Crowe’s RBI groundout.
For the game, Dupont scored a run.
Crowe walked twice, scored a run and drove in a run.
Burris had a pair of singles.
Spears scored a run.
Camaille walked.
Burch singled, doubled and had an RBI.
Carpenter walked and scored a run.
KaKa Seal singled and walked.
Hodges singled and drove in a run.
Varnado walked.
Centreville had a hit each by Darden, Emilea Roberts and Amanda Newman.
Darden and Emily Hall had a walk each.
On Saturday, Bowling Green won all three of its games in the Amite School Tournament.
Contests were either 80 minutes or seven innings.
Bowling Green won its first game over Cathedral Unit School, 11-2.
Crowe went 3-for-3 with a double and a trio of RBIs.
Hodges tallied two hits and a pair of runs batted in.
Carpenter had a hit and two RBIs.
Seal recorded two hits and an RBI.
Burris posted two hits and she drove in two runs.
Hallie Serigne totaled a hit and an RBI.
Camaille had a hit for Bowling Green.
Burris threw four innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
The next game was a 7-1 victory over Oak Forest Academy.
Burris, Carpenter and Burch all had a hit and two RBIs each.
Camaille posted a hit in the win.
The final contest was a 9-1 win over Cathedral Unit School.
Varnado had a hit and three runs batted in.
Seal posted a hit and two RBIs.
Spears, Camaille, Carpenter and Hodges all had one hit.
Burris allowed one run on four hits with a strikeout over three innings.
