Pine’s Cotton headed to state meet

Pine’s Markell Cotton is headed to the Class 2A state meet.
Cotton qualified for the state meet after finishing third in the long jump at the Region 3-2A Meet that was held Wednesday at Tad Gormley Stadium.
Cotton long jumped 19 feet, 7 inches. Livingston Collegiate’s Kiman Rowan won at 20-0.5. Pine’s Demontrea Baham was 12th at 16-4.
Wednesday’s meet was a qualifier. The top three athletes from each event made it to state. The Class 2A state meet will take place Friday, May 3, at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium.
Pine’s 4×100 relay team was fourth with a time of 45.13 seconds. The group had Cotton, Jordan Anderson, Nikki Lee and Baham. Amite won in 44.73.
Cotton ran seventh in the 100 meters at 11.41. Riverside Academy’s Ahmonte Watkins was the winner at 10.82.
Lee took seventh in the javelin with a throw of 121-3. Isidore Newman’s Keil Moss won at 147-4.
Anderson was 10th in the 200 with a time of 24.09. Watkins won in Watkins ran a 22.04 to win.
Larry Williams took 11th in the shot put, with a distance of 34-1.5. Patrick Taylor Science/Technology’s Madison Grey topped the event at 43-11.5.
Blaine Kirkpatrick was 11th in the 800 at 2:28. St. Thomas Aquinas’ John Ross Donnes won in 2:01.
Newman topped the team competition with 103 points, as 17 teams posted at least one point. Riverside Academy was second with 84, followed by Patrick Taylor Science/Technology with 69, Livingston Collegiate Academy’s 54 and Amite rounded out the top five with 54. Pine tied Fisher and Pope John Paul II with 10.
