William Carey University’s Devin Smith was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 15-21.
“I was really excited,” Smith said. “It came as a shock, but right now, we’re going into the final stretch of the season. It was good to bring it to the final stretch, but we’re trying to finish strong. It was good to bring positive momentum to the final week of the season right before we start the conference tournament.”
The 2015 Mt. Hermon School graduate had a strong game against RV Missouri Baptist on Wednesday, April 17.
Smith pitched all seven innings of the 9-3 victory.
He allowed three runs on four hits with 10 strikeouts and he did not walk anybody in his complete-game performance.
“That was a big thing, getting ahead of hitters,” Smith said. “When I was able to get ahead, I was able to go to my offspeed and when I was able to go to my offspeed, I was able to keep them off-balanced.”
William Carey’s offense also gave him good run support.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 4-0 lead through two innings with three in the first and another in the second.
William Carey made it 7-0 after 5.5 innings before Missouri Baptist scored its three runs in the sixth. The Crusaders added two more in the seventh for the 9-3 final.
William Carey will be back in action Saturday, April 27, against Loyola University at home at 1 p.m.
