Pine’s Cotton wins long jump in district

Pine’s Markell Cotton captured the long jump at the District 9-2A Meet that took place Monday at Christ Episcopal School.
Cotton long jumped 19 feet, 8 inches. Teammate Demontrea Baham was fourth with a distance of 18-11.
Cotton was also second in the 100 meters with a time of 11.49 seconds. Amite’s Ladarrius Williams clocked an 11.38 to win.
Monday’s meet was a qualifying competition. The top four finishers from each event advanced to the Region 3-2A that will take place next Wednesday at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans.
Several other Raiders qualified for regionals.
Jordan Anderson was second in the 200 in 23.96. Williams won in 23.65. Pine’s Demontrea Baham was fifth at 25.35.
Pine’s 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams were runner-up with times of 45.22 and 1 minute, 54 seconds, respectively. The 4×100 group included Cotton, Anderson, Nikki Lee and Baham. The Raiders’ 4×200 team had Ian Beltran, Trent Barber, Baham and Blaine Kirkpatrick. Amite won both races, the 4×100 in 44.91 and 4×200 in 1:33.
Back to individual events, Lee was third in the javelin with a throw of 128-5. Pope John Paul II’s Spencer Woodruff won at 131-7. Pine’s Larry Williams took fifth at 108-6.
Kirkpatrick ran fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:34. Amite’s Richard Sopsher’s 2:10 was best. Barber was fifth in 2:36.
Larry Williams was fourth in the shot put with a distance of 35-4. Northlake Christian School’s Jacob Herrington won with a distance of 41-5. Braden Johnson was seventh at 30-1.
Johnson and Larry Williams were sixth and eighth in the discus, with throws of 82-6 and 68-3. Herrington threw a 125-2 to win.
Lee was seventh in the 400 in 1:19. Independence’s Deangelo Gaines won in 55.24.
Pine was third in the team competition with 45 points.
Amite won with 130, as five teams posted points. Pope John Paul II was second at 79 with Northlake Christian’s 41, fourth, followed by Independence’s 13.
