Varnado’s Keys, 2 relay teams advance to regionals

Varnado’s Destiny Keys qualified for regionals in a pair of events and two relay teams made it at the District 8-1A meet that was held Tuesday at West St. John.
Keys made it to the regionals in the long jump and triple jump.
Keys was third in the long jump at 14 feet, 8 inches. Covenant Christian Academy’s Adaylia Collins won with a distance of 16-0.
Keys was fourth in the triple jump at 30-11. Covenant Christian Academy’s Haile Deville jumped 34-0 to win.
Tuesday’s competition was a qualifier. The top four finishers from each event are headed to the Region 3-1A Meet, which takes place April 23 at Ponchatoula High School.
Two Varnado relay teams made it in the 4×100 and 4×200.
Both were second.
Each team featured Debriana Weary, Keys, ShunTiara Nichols and Javonti Bickham. The 4×100 finished in 54.98 seconds and the 4×200 completed the race in 2 minutes, 3.99 seconds. West St. John won the two events with times of 54.90 and 2:03.76.
Also for Varnado, Nichols was fifth in the 200 with a 32.94. KIPP Booker T. Washington’s DeShell Carr won in 28.35.
Bickham and Asia Magee took fifth and sixth in the javelin respectively with throws of 62-6 and 44-3. Ridgewood’s Sofia DeVincenti won at 80-3.
Sharaday and Tamarya Bell were sixth and eight in the shot put with a 23-2 and 20-7. West St. John’s Stevan’te Hamilton won at 32-9.5.
Weary was seventh in the 100 with a 14.22. St. Martin’s Episcopal Kylar Coleman won in 13.36.
Bell was seventh in the discus with a throw of 47-2. West St. John’s Miya Kelley won at 90-0.
