Franklinton, Mt. Hermon softball successful in Sumner Tournament

Franklinton and Mt. Hermon School both had solid play in the Jewel Sumner Tournament that took place March 8-9.
Franklinton posted a 3-0 record while Mt. Hermon went 2-1.
The Lady Demons opened the tournament with an 11-7 victory over French Settlement.
Franklinton led 6-4 through five innings, but French Settlement went ahead 7-6 with three in the bottom of the sixth. The Lady Demons responded with five in the seventh to capture the victory.
Ashlan Ard and Kiersten Allen combined for eight of Franklinton’s 14 hits with four each.
Ard’s solid season continued, as she went 4-for-5 with a double and a triple, two runs batted in and two runs scored.
Allen was 4-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
Albanie Fussell went 3-for-4 with two doubles. She drove in three runs and scored one.
Brylie Fowler singled and scored two runs.
Bailey Spears singled, drove in a run and scored two runs.
Bailey Brooks had a hit and an RBI.
Ashlyn Welch, Missouri Varnado and Aaliyah Faour all scored one run in the victory.
Aleigha Fussell allowed three earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and four walks in a complete game performance.
Franklinton played twice on the final day and won both.
The first was a 14-3 five-inning win over Maurepas.
Allen drove in four runs in a 2-for-3 contest with two runs scored. Both of her hits were doubles.
Welch singled twice, drove in two runs and scored three runs.
Ard singled, doubled and had a pair of RBIs.
Fowler and Spears both singled and scored two runs.
Varnado singled, drove in two runs and scored a run.
Aleigha Fussell singled and had an RBI.
Albanie Fussell had a hit.
Brooks tallied two runs while Faour and Nielson scored a run each in the victory.
Aleigha Fussell pitched all five innings and allowed two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
The next game was a 17-4 six-inning victory over St. Thomas Aquinas.
The Lady Demons scored 15 runs over the final two innings with nine in the fifth and six more in the sixth.
Ard went 3-for-5 with a homer, a double, four RBIs and three runs scored.
Aleigha Fussell posted two hits that included a double and four runs batted in.
Spears singled twice, drove in two and scored a run.
Welch singled, doubled and scored two runs.
Allen doubled twice, drove in a pair of runs and scored two runs.
Albanie Fussell had two hits including a double to go with an RBI.
Fowler posted a hit, an RBI and two runs scored.
Brooks singled and scored a run.
Laynea Stafford and Varnado both singled, drove in a run and scored a run.
Nielson and Faour scored a run each.
Aleigha Fussell was the winning pitcher.
In a game that was not in the tournament on March 11, the Lady Demons fell to 2018 Division II state semifinalist Archbishop Hannan, 10-1, at home.
Fowler doubled and drove in a run for Franklinton’s only hit.
Ard scored the run.
Like Franklinton, Mt. Hermon played a game on the opening day and two more the next day.
The Lady Jackets were topped in the first game by Hammond, 9-6.
Kalei Hughes was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in.
Kristian Schexnider went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Joley Fortenberry had two hits and drove three runs in.
Mt. Hermon opened play On March 9 with a 17-2 victory over Pope John Paul II.
Fortenberry had a big game, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs.
Madisyn Applegate tallied two hits and she drove in three runs.
Schexnider tallied a hit and three RBIs.
Alexa Bulloch and Alexis Magee both posted a hit and an RBI. Bulloch also pitched and struck out four.
The next game was an 11-2 win over Loranger.
Fortenberry homered and drove in two in a two-hit game.
Bulloch had two hits and two RBIs.
Magee, Macey Applegate and Hughes all tallied two hits and two RBIs.
Schexnider pitched and struck out four.
