Bogalusa overcame a tough night at the free-throw line and a third-quarter run to defeat Archbishop Hannan, 45-40, in a District 7-3A game Tuesday at home.
“I saw a little more heart, a little more determination, a little more pride than we usually have,” Bogalusa coach Frank Gambino said. “They were out there and actually wanted it in the second half. They went out there, battled, made the shots we needed to make, played the defense. We broke down a few times where we shouldn’t have, but we corrected and we stayed in the game.”
Bogalusa trailed 6-2 after the first quarter and 17-15 at halftime.
The Lady Jacks took a 24-21 lead in the third quarter with 5:05 left.
Tasia Lewis made a field goal with 4:47 on the clock that began a 7-0 run. Tahiya Brown made a steal and a layup to make it a seven-point game. A Bogalusa steal led to Dinasia Harris recording a layup and Chloe’ Foster split free throws, giving the Lady Jacks a 31-21 lead with 2:51 on the third-quarter clock.
The 10-point lead was the biggest by either team.
Archbishop Hannan countered with an 11-1 run of its own.
Mallory Kramer scored the first four points to make it 31-25 with 1:45 left. Mallory Banta was good on a put back after an offensive rebound, trimming the lead to four. Foster hit 1-of-2 from the charity stripe with 44.4 seconds left and Emily Morain was good on a follow-up shot after an offensive rebound. It was 32-29 through the third quarter.
The run continued in the fourth quarter as Kramer made a layup on the period’s first possession and Kramer gave the Lady Hawks the lead on another layup. Hannan led 33-32 with 6:56 left.
But Bogalusa overcame the run.
“What we did was, we had to compose ourselves,” Gambino said. “We were breaking down mentally. I just needed them to regain focus to get back in the game.”
After the run, the game was tied at 34-34 and 36-36.
The contest was tied at 36-36 with 3:13 on the clock and then the Lady Jacks tallied six in a row. Foster gave the Lady Jacks the lead with 1:38 left after hitting a shot and getting fouled. Foster missed the free throw, but Bogalusa got the rebound and Lewis hit the follow up shot and the Lady Jacks were up 40-36. Harris made a shot after an offensive rebound with 1:10 to go.
Hannan trimmed the lead to 43-40 with 30 seconds left and the Lady Jacks sealed it when Brown made a pair of clutch free throws with 7.9 seconds left in the 45-40 win.
Brown led Bogalusa with 13 points. She made a pair of 3-pointers.
Foster recorded 12 points and Lewis posted 10.
Harris tallied eight points and Deranique Lee added two in the victory.
Kramer posted a game-high 16 points for Hannan.
