Varnado Junior High’s eighth grade basketball team won the parish championship with a 42-17 victory over Franklinton Junior High on Thursday at Pine High School.
Outside of last year’s state championship tournament, this team has won every game they played in the parish over the last three years, posting a 24-0 record.
The team has won the parish championship in their age group each of the last three years.
“This group of kids is very special in athletic ability and basketball IQ,” Varnado Junior High eighth grade coach Brad Cooper said. “I told them in the first quarter that the game was theirs and that I was just going to sit on the bench. They went out there and impressed everyone in the gym. Their love for the game and their drive to win surpasses any team I’ve coached so far.”
The team will be playing in the double-elimination state championship tournament in Alexandria, beginning Saturday, Jan. 26.
