COVINGTON — Bogalusa fought through three first-half turnovers and was an onside kick recovery away from having an opportunity to erase a 16-point deficit in a 28-20 loss to Archbishop Hannan on the road Friday a District 7-3A contest.

“When you play a team that hadn’t been beat and you turn the ball over three times, it’s hard to come back from that,” Bogalusa coach Adam Brumfield said. “My kids fought hard. That’s two games in the last two weeks that have been decided by just a few points. I still feel like we’re playing good ball at the right time and we might come in a higher seed next after this loss, but I still like my chances of going on the road and winning a ballgame as long as my kids keep playing like they’re playing now.”

One of the turnovers led directly to a score, as Bogalusa tried to return a punt, but lost yardage and eventually fumbled. Archbishop Hannan’s Jake Dalmado recovered the ball in the end zone for the touchdown. Victor Harvey, who was 4-for-4 on extra points, added the point after to make it 7-0 with 2:46 left in the first quarter.

Hannan went up 14-0 in the second quarter after completing a 10-play, 60-yard drive when Dawson Millen threw to Dalmado for a 4-yard scoring pass. Harvey added the extra point for a 14-0 lead with 6:47 left in the first half.

Bogalusa pulled to within one possession late in the second quarter. The Lumberjacks took over at their 28 with 1:01 left. Facing third-and-24 from Hannan’s 32, Josh Taylor threw a pass to Raheem Roberts, who made the catch in the end zone for the touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good, keeping it 14-6 at halftime.

Taylor had a strong game, throwing for 142 yards and the touchdown and he ran for 125 yards and a score.

The teams exchanged punts to start the second half and Hannan scored on its second possession of the third quarter on second-and-goal at the 10 when Millen broke a tackle at the 10 and ran to the end zone. Harvey’s point after gave the Hawks a 21-6 lead with 2:11 on the clock.

But Bogalusa came back on the next drive. Talik Williams took a handoff and ran up the middle on a 12-yard rushing touchdown, trimming the lead to 21-12 after the two-point conversion was no good with 10:28 left in the fourth quarter.

Williams ran for 80 yards.

It stayed 21-12 until late. Bogalusa had the Hawks backed up, but Millen broke free from his own 14 and ran 86 yards to pay dirt. Harvey added the extra point to make it a 28-12 game with 2:20 to go.

Bogalusa wasn’t done yet. The Lumberjacks returned the kickoff to Hannan’s 48, but started at the 33 after a penalty on the Hawks.

Taylor ran for five yards and then scored on a 28-yard run on the next play. Taylor then put up the two-point conversion on a run and the Lumberjacks were within one possession at 28-20 with 1:34 left.

Bogalusa attempted an onside kick, but Hannan recovered it and ran out the clock.

The Lumberjacks finish the regular season with a 4-5 overall record and 2-2 district mark.

Archbishop Hannan completed a 10-0 regular season and 4-0 district mark to capture the league.

Both teams now await the playoff brackets.
