The Bowling Green High School Buccaneers defeated the Wayne Academy Jaguars at home Friday night in their fourth game of the season. Bowling Green was coming off a 28-19 victory over Silliman Institute the previous week.

The first half of the game saw the Buccaneers (4-0) pushing hard against the Jaguars’ defense. The Jaguars managed to hold off the first three drives led by quarterback Johntae McDowell. It was the Buccaneers’ defense and Jackson Dobraska who ended the standoff and put first touchdown on the board at the end of the second quarter.

A pass from Wayne Academy quarterback Colton Coxwell from its own 26 yard-line was intercepted by Dobraska at the 29. Dobraska ran it back for the touchdown and put the Buccaneers on the board. Brayden McGehee kicked the extra point and score was 7-0 at halftime.

The Jaguars’ defense didn’t let up in the third quarter and neither did the Buccaneers’. Despite a couple long drives by both teams, neither was able to punch through and score during the third quarter.

The fourth quarter opened with the Buccaneers in possession at their own 16 yard-line. McDowell and the Buccaneers pushed hard through a nine-play drive and, with a final hand off to Kengie Gordon at the Jaguar 8-yard-line, put another touchdown on the board. McGehee’s kick went wide and left the score at 13-0 in favor of the Buccaneers.

With a minute left on the clock, the Jaguars were in possession of the ball. A punt by McDowell had put the Jaguars at their own 3-yard-line. Quarterback Jacob Castle fumbled the snap. Buccaneer Mitchell Lott recovered the ball and punched through for the second defensive touchdown of the game and the third overall touchdown for Bowling Green. The extra point went wide again and the final score was 19-0.

“Good teams find a way to win. That’s what we did,” said Bowling Green coach Boomer Nunez, regarding the strong showing by his team’s defense.

The Buccaneers will travel to face Oak Forest Academy on Friday.
