Varnado solid in scrimmage

Varnado’s Wildcats were solid in a three-team scrimmage with Livingston Collegiate and North Central.
“I was pleased with the effort our young men gave throughout the scrimmage,” Varnado coach Anthony Hicks said. “Although I know we have along way to go, our kids were able to gain some experience, which is very important for a young ball club. Offensively, we had some very good drives administered from the scripted plays, but also a couple of bad plays.
“However, with more practices and film evaluation, I believe these mistakes can be corrected. We were able to see the progress from our three quarterbacks, our predominantly junior backfield and our defense played very well. Our special teams were decent.”
Kim McGowan Jr. threw two touchdown passes and Jep Bonnette and Zantonio Peters passed for one each.
Kevin Brooks, Peters and Darrius Harry all caught touchdown passes.
Brooks, Jaylen Peters, Zantonio Peters and Korterrius Mingo had rushing touchdowns.
Defensively, the Wildcats did not allow any touchdowns.
Varnado will be competing in the Washington Parish Jamboree on Friday at Pine. The Wildcats will face Franklinton in the opener that takes place at 6 p.m.
