Ben’s Ford will open the 2018 regular season tonight by hosting New Orleans Home School, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
“It’s a game that we definitely need to win,” Ben’s Ford second-year coach Dean King said. “It’s week one and it’s a team I think we should be able to beat, but the thing about it is, we’re a team that can’t overlook anybody. We need to play each game like it’s the biggest game.
“Last year, we beat this team and we did not have a scrimmage or a jamboree. This year, we played two good teams in the scrimmage, and last week, we played a good Salem team in the jamboree. This week, we want to win, but we also want to play a solid game.”
Ben’s Ford went 2-7 last season, and one of those victories was in the meeting between these two teams, 35-6.
Ben’s Ford came up short last week in its jamboree game, 6-0, to Salem. One of the things that hurt the Eagles was not scoring in their three trips to the red zone. King said offensively, they have to do a better job with their reads overall.
Tyler Winstead threw for 86 yards.
Alston Moore led the team in rushing with 64 yards on 14 carries.
Defensively, the Eagles were solid. One long drive to open the second half was Salem’s lone score.
“I was very pleased with the way our secondary stepped up their game,” King said. “That was one thing we worked on, covering the pass and stepping up against the run. I thought our safeties Chase Penton and Jordan Provost came up and made good 1-on-1 tackles. Our cornerbacks Evan Miller and Justin Moore did a good job.
“Austin Stogner is our best defensive player. He just got released (from the doctor because of an injury) last Wednesday and he played pretty well, but I expect him to play better this week. Overall, I was pleased with us defensively.”
New Orleans Home School posted a 2-9 record last season. The team reached the semifinals of the Association of Christian Educators of Louisiana Football League, but lost to the Acadiana Defenders, 37-26.
New Orleans Home School played in the Ben’s Ford Jamboree last Friday and defeated Acadiana Home School, 8-0.
